Emergency home repairs: what to do first

Burst pipe, no heating, broken lock or storm damage? The first steps to take in a home emergency and when to call an emergency handyman.

A home emergency is stressful. Knowing the first steps limits the damage while help is on the way.

Water leaks and burst pipes

Turn off the water at the stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink. Switch off electrics near the leak at the consumer unit. Move valuables and take photos for your insurer.

No heating or hot water

Check the boiler pressure, thermostat and that the gas supply is on. If you smell gas, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency number on 0800 111 999.

Broken doors, windows and locks

Secure the opening as best you can and call for an emergency repair. Keep receipts for your insurer.

Storm damage

Stay away from damaged roofs and loose masonry. Arrange a temporary cover to stop water getting in.

Know where your shut-offs are

Everyone in the house should know where the stopcock, gas meter shut-off and consumer unit are. Label them and keep a torch nearby.

Keep a list of emergency contacts

Keep the numbers for your insurer, energy supplier, water company and a trusted repair service somewhere easy to find, including on your phone.

After the emergency

Once the immediate problem is safe, arrange a proper permanent repair and check for hidden damage such as wet insulation or floorboards.
